Job Overview:

Responsible for assisting the operation and maintenance of the Stanford University Golf Course, Siebel Varsity Training Complex and Learning Center. The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course 2nd Assistant Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, students, faculty, members, staff, and guests of the property.

 

Basic Functions:

  • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
  • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the 1st Assistant Superintendent on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
  • Administers and enforces University and course rules, regulations and policies for staff.
  • Works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to operate the golf course, Siebel facility and Learning Center in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
  • Use of technology and tools to provide the most efficient use of time and materials to complete job tasks.
  • Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Oversees and assists with the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees on the facility grounds, specifically the golf course, Siebel complex and Learning Center.
  • Assists the 1st Assistant and directs staff on completing daily tasks to set standards. Holds staff accountable and corrects where necessary
  • Analyzes problem areas on a daily basis and communicates plan to improve or solve issues
  • Irrigation assessment of all playing surfaces on a daily basis and make corrections to provide a firm and uniform surface.
  • Communication on a daily basis to Golf Course Superintendent and 1st Assistant of any and all issues that may affect any of the personnel, turf, irrigation, water, plant and landscape systems
  • Manages an aggressive water usage tracking plan and irrigation systems and provides monthly usage.
  • Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within University, OSHA, county, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
  • Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the golf course grounds, Siebel complex and Learning Center in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintains records and completes required reporting- mandatory daily tasks and where jobs are completed- all with specifics and accuracy

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years working experience on a golf course with increasing responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs to modern practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
  • Skill in supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel in a positive manner.
  • Daily follow up of tasks completed on a daily basis to ensure completion to set standards.
  • Eye for details and ability to problem solve challenges on the fly.
  • Interpersonal skill to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, faculty, staff, officials, employees, members and the general public.
  • Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
  • Use of Task Tracker software to post job assignments and track job progress. Updating completed tasks at the end of the day to track working progress.
  • Assist Superintendent with creating and scheduling short term and long term goals that continue the growth and improvements to the playing surfaces
  • Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
  • Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance.

 

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum degree certificate in turfgrass science or related field of study or process of acquiring in the next 2 years
  • Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) for applying chemicals and fertilizers- or ability to obtain in 6 months

The expected pay range for this position is $108,145 to $108,500 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
